About me

I am a woodworker based in North Lancashire, close to Morecambe Bay. I undertake all sorts of woodworking projects, specializing in producing furniture pieces and fine joinery to commission. After training as an engineer I worked for a time in boatbuilding before moving into teaching. I established my woodworking business in 2002.

My projects

Every project starts with a wide-ranging discussion with the client to explore design ideas. Drawings are produced of possible designs before refining the design details. Sometimes models or full size mock-ups are used to confirm the final design. Materials and finishes are chosen from samples. Once construction of a piece has begun my clients are welcome to visit the workshop to see their piece being made.

Assisted DIY

Sometimes I work alongside clients, particularly on interiors projects. I provide design input, technical advice, and workshop facilities to supplement the skills and labour of my clients. This approach has led to some very productive collaborations.

Boatbuilding

Given the choice I'd rather be sailing, and I am fascinated by the construction and craftsmanship of traditional boats. I have been involved with a number of restoration projects, and I am currently working on Valkyrie, a 20' Thames Estuary half-decker. Click on the picture below to see more of this project.

Environmental issues

All manufacturing consumes energy and materials, but I am keen to reduce the environmental impact of my business. Wood is an inherently 'green' material if it is grown under a well-managed regime. I try to avoid using tropical species because of the issues related to its production, preferring European or UK timber. I have a growing stock of reclaimed hardwoods which are used for furniture and boat repairs.

In the workshop I try to minimise waste. Offcuts go home for the woodburner, shavings are used for animal bedding or are composted. Paper, card and metals are recycled. I am now using more water-based paints and finishes in preference to solvent-based products. This year I intend to install a wood stove in the workshop for space heating to reduce electricity consumption.
