Oak plank doors

This door and frame was one of several created for a cottage renovation. After looking at many examples we tried to distill the essence of a plank door to create a pleasing fusion of materials, proportions and detailing.

Oak was used throughout, and we developed a finishing technique which preserved the slight irregularities of the sawn planks. Beads were run by hand, before joining the planks together with oak tongues. The ledges were nailed on using traditional cut nails rivetted over for security. The hardware was chosen for its fine detailing and unfinished appearance.

The door is shown here without any finish, but eventually it will get a coat or two of OSMO wax-oil.
